Alright?
So this is a list of SNES games and their preferable version to get assuming a few things:
- You have a PAL Super Nintendo modified to allow a 60Hz (NTSC) output
- You prefer to buy PAL games (for their aesthetics) but only if they work 100% perfectly at 60Hz
This list is from my own personal experiences and will expand as I get / test more games.
Check out these other posts for modifying your SNES and for playing NTSC-U games on a PAL console.
Game | 100% 60Hz Compatible | Version To Get | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Chrono Trigger | N/A | NTSC-U | No PAL release |
Donkey Kong Country | Yes | PAL | |
Donkey Kong Country 2 | Yes | PAL | |
DOOM | No | NTSC-U | Super FX games only run at the original frequency and can’t be switched |
F-Zero | Nearly | NTSC-U | Very minor audio sync issues when races start |
Final Fantasy III | N/A | NTSC-U | No PAL release |
Mortal Kombat II | Yes | PAL | |
Starwing | No | NTSC-U | Super FX games only run at the original frequency and can’t be switched |
Street Fighter 2: Turbo | Yes | NTSC-J | PAL works fine but only the Jap release has the proper character names before the US & UK switched it all around due to the M. Bison / Mike Tyson legal stuff |
Super Mario Kart | No | NTSC-U | Sprite corruption and screen flashes |
Super Mario World | No | NTSC-U | Screen flashes on home screen and sprite corruption on in-game map |
Super Probotector / Contra III | No | NTSC-U | Speed issues due to PAL optimisation, plus with the US version you get the Rambo-esque dudes rather than the sissy robots |
Super Street Fighter 2 | Yes | NTSC-J | PAL works fine but only the Jap release has the proper character names before the US & UK switched it all around due to the M. Bison / Mike Tyson legal stuff |
TMNT IV: Turtles In Time | Yes | PAL or NTSC-U | With the US release they are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which is how it’s meant to be, in the EU it was switched to Hero. Apparently Ninja came across as being too violent. Meh. |
Zelda: A Link To The Past | Yes | PAL |
There is a further list that I found by a guy called (I think) David Kelly… work a look.
It would be great if you could add your own findings in the comments… Would be pretty cool to have a community generated master list
Check back every now and then, I’m sure there will be a few more titles added.
